Cheap Things to do in Belfast

6th Jan 2025

It's the start of the year. The festive season has just passed, you've bought all your friends and family presents, enjoyed a Christmas night out or two (not to mention the New Year's celebrations) and the days until that next paycheque are dragging in.

Whether you're a student, a local, or a budget-conscious tourist, we all feel the pinch at this time of year. Luckily, you don't need to spend a fortune to have a memorable time in the city, there are plenty of cheap things to do in Belfast!

From historic landmarks to crazy golf, the city has something for everyone no matter your budget. To help you plan your trip or day out, we've put together a list of some of our favourite budget friendly things to do in Belfast.

The Ulster Museum

If you're into culture and history (or even if you're not!), the Ulster Museum is a great place to visit. Located in the Botanic Gardens by Queen's University, the museum is packed with everything from ancient Egyptian mummies to contemporary art.

And the best part is, entry is free! Whether you're into dinosaurs, art or just fancy a stroll around the impressive building, this is one of the top things to do in Belfast if you're on a budget.

Belfast Botanic Gardens

If you're visiting the Ulster Museum, take the time to wander through the Botanic Gardens as well. Only a stone's throw from Queen's University, Belfast Botanic Gardens is a lush, green oasis in the heart of the city.

If you're a student, you probably already know of this popular spot as it's a great place for shaking the cobwebs off during those library sessions! But you don't need to be a student to enjoy this green retreat, which also includes the Palm House and Tropical Ravine, the gardens are open to the public and completely free to visit.

Whilst it might be a little cold in January, if you're visiting in the warmer months, you can save money on food and drink as well by packing a picnic and enjoying lunch surrounded by nature. It's a great way to pass the day without spending a penny!

Clifton House

If you haven't had enough of your history fix at the Ulster Museum, Clifton House offers an engrossing look into Belfast's past. Situated in a beautiful Georgian building, this former poorhouse tells the story of the city's social history.

While it's not free, it's still an affordable way to delve into the city's culture and history for £10 or less, and the buildings and grounds are worth the visit alone. Adult tickets are £10, concession tickets are £9, or you can grab a Belfast Visitor Pass ticket for only £7.50. The latter option is particularly good if you're in the city for a couple of days or more, as you can get discounts on various other attractions like Belfast City Zoo, Titanic Belfast and SS Nomadic and more.

Belfast City Hall

You can't visit Belfast without stopping by Belfast City Hall, a stunning Edwardian building in the heart of the city. For only £6, you can take a guided tour to learn all about the building's architecture and the city's past.

The City Hall is also home to the Belfast Christmas Market during the festive period, but regardless of when you visit, it's a lovely landmark to explore on the cheap.

Belfast City Hall

Peace Walls

A visit to the Peace Walls is one of the most thought-provoking things to do in Belfast. These walls, which divide communities in the city, are an important part of Belfast's history.

First put up in 1969 during The Troubles, these walls were first made out of corrugated steel and topped with barbed wire. Today, many of the walls still stand and are illustrated with various murals that depict the city's political and social history, serving as both a reminder of the past and a symbol of the city's ongoing peace process.

In total, the walls stretch over 21 miles, with the majority being located in north and west Belfast. While it's technically free to visit the Peace Walls, you will most likely encounter transport costs if you visit via a taxi or bus tour. Whatever option you go for, it's an important activity for those wanting to understand the city's complex history.

St. George's Market

Open Friday-Sunday, St. George's Market is a great place to spend a weekend morning or afternoon! The market is full of artisan food stalls, crafts, and live music from local vendors and artists.

While it can be tempting to buy some of the delicious food or handmade goods, wandering through the market is free! So, if you're in town and looking for cheap things to do in Belfast, just show up and enjoy the vibe. You never know, you might luck out and get a free sample or two!

Belfast Castle

If you're in the mood for a scenic walk with panoramic views of Belfast, Belfast Castle is the place to go. This grand estate with beautiful gardens sits on top of Cave Hill in North Belfast.

Entry to the gardens, castle and visitor centre is free, making it a great way to spend the day exploring, soaking up the history and taking in one of the best views of the city. It is definitely worth the extra travel time for an affordable day out!

Mini Golf

If you're looking for something a bit more active to finish off your day of sight-seeing, mini gold if always a fun and affordable option for families, friends or couples.

Two of the more popular venues are ScrapYard and Lost City Adventure Golf, with prices starting at just £7 per person. Plus, you can get an added discount with a Belfast Visitor Pass!

Other Free Events and Activities

If that wasn't enough options for cheap things to do in Belfast, there are also a ton of additional free events that happen every month in the city. From outdoor cinema screenings to art exhibitions and live performances, there's always something going on that won't cost you a penny.
